Cameroon: three soldiers killed in a separatist attack in the North-West

At least three soldiers of the Cameroonian defense forces were killed on Sunday in an armed attack in Bafut, in the Northwest region of Cameroon, according to military sources. The attack targeted a strategic army position in this municipality of the Mezam department, an area cyclically affected by armed violence related to the separatist crisis that has shaken the country’s two Anglophone regions for several years.

The three victims fell after separatists launched an assault on the Bafusco Air military post around 10 p.m. on the night of May 31 to June 1, 2026. The sudden attack turned into a shootout resulting in three deaths on the army side, namely a corporal and two second-class soldiers.

Armed individuals affiliated with separatist groups claimed the attack on social media, according to the same sources. The Northwest and Southwest regions have been the scene of clashes between government forces and armed separatist groups since the escalation of the Anglophone crisis into armed conflict in 2017.
