
Gathered during a capitalization workshop in Yaoundé, health actors praised the results of the vaccination strengthening project conducted in the districts of Garoua-Boulaï and Ketté. Implemented with the support of IOM and Gavi, the program has reached populations previously distant from health services.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) highlighted the results of the vaccination strengthening project for zero-dose children and under-vaccinated populations in the East region. On the occasion of a capitalization workshop organized under the leadership of the Ministry of Public Health, through the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI), technical, humanitarian, and institutional partners reviewed the actions carried out in the health districts of Garoua-Boulaï and Ketté.

Deployed in an area characterized by high population mobility and difficulties in accessing care, the project brought vaccination services closer to the most vulnerable communities. The initiative notably relied on mapping migratory dynamics, deploying mobile and advanced teams, as well as strengthening community mobilization.
The discussions allowed for evaluating the results obtained, identifying the most effective approaches, and exploring sustainability prospects. Participants emphasized the relevance of a strategy adapted to local realities to improve vaccination coverage.

For IOM and its partners, the experience conducted in the East confirms that reaching unvaccinated children requires a better understanding of population movements and a closer health service offer. The lessons learned from this project could now serve as a reference for extending these approaches to other areas facing the same challenges.
