Cameroon joined the international community on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, to celebrate ID-DAY. Through a conference organized in Yaoundé, the National Civil Status Office made a strong appeal to the Government for the official recognition of this day.
Held under the theme “My identity, my shadow. Never separated!”, the 2026 edition relies on a powerful metaphor: the shadow that accompanies each person throughout their life. Central message: to guarantee every individual a reliable and lasting legal identity, an essential condition for exercising rights and accessing services.

Led by Prof. Armand LEKA ESSOMBA, head of the sociology department at the University of Yaoundé I, the conference brought together BUNEC officials, ID4AFRICA ambassadors, representatives of identity system institutions, technical and financial partners, and civil society.
The meeting was held in the presence of Jean Hyacinthe EBELA, ID4AFRICA ambassador and representative of the BUNEC Director General, and Eliane EFA. The booths of the DGSN, UNDP, and IOM presented their contributions to the identity system.
In preparation, BUNEC had organized a sports march on September 12 and an awareness campaign at the “Ile Educative” school complex in Emana.
