
A few weeks before the celebration, several stakeholders are taking measures under the impetus of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development to ensure that the next edition is a collective success.
From September 28 to October 5, 2026, the city of Maroua, regional capital of the Far North, will host the festivities marking the 40th edition of World Habitat Day. Held under the theme: “Adequate housing for all,” the 2026 edition focuses on discussions about housing and urban development. Activities related to this celebration include the development of the housing village, clean city competitions, the best urban and architectural idea, as well as round tables and thematic sessions. Scientific reflections and exchanges, awareness-raising actions, city enhancement, exhibitions, and local initiatives will also fill the week of activities.

Through this edition, which follows the 2025 one celebrated in Bafoussam, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development pursues an ambition. That of making this day a space where ideas, public policies, innovations, and citizens meet to imagine the Cameroonian cities of tomorrow, according to the ministry’s weekly newsletter. According to the same source, the celebration highlights public policies, projects, innovations, and best practices contributing to improving housing and living conditions for the population.
In preparation for this celebration, the regional authorities and a delegation from the Ministry of Housing dispatched to the region have already discussed the foundations for a successful organization of this event. While each stakeholder already knows their role, sites have been identified to host the festivities. The inaugural march will take place on Paul Biya Boulevard. Other events will be held in the multipurpose hall and at the Fantasia site.

Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1985, World Habitat Day is celebrated every first Monday of October. Carried in Cameroon by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, its organization mobilizes local authorities, development partners, the private sector, universities, and civil society.
