Cameroon/ FINAJU: end of the games in Ebolowa, Olympic torch passed to Bertoua

The University of Bertoua will host the second edition of the National Finals of the FINAJU University Games new format in 2028. The university institution was given the mission at the end of the first edition which concluded on August 9, 2026, in Ebolowa.

The Olympic torch was extinguished on Sunday, August 10, 2026, at the multisport gymnasium of the University of Ebolowa marking the end of the National Finals of the university games new format. Hosted by the University of Ebolowa, the first edition of FINAJU paves the way for the preparation of the second edition. It will take place at the University of Bertoua in the East region. The Minister of State, Minister of Higher Education, Jacques Fame Ndongo, handed over the Olympic torch and the games flag to the Rector of the University of Bertoua, Dieudonné Emmanuel Pegnyemb, at the end of the competition last Sunday in Ebolowa.

Among the three latest universities created in 2022 by the President of the Republic, the University of Bertoua is, like that of Ebolowa, still under construction. The organization of these games will undoubtedly accelerate the establishment of certain infrastructures. The Finals of the games will take place there to conclude the second edition which will have started in 2027 with the zonal university championships. To this end, the universities of Yaoundé II, Douala, Bamenda, and Ngaoundere will host these championships.

Regarding the games that concluded in Ebolowa, the university institutions and their athletes parted ways after five days of competition, living together, and cultural animation. At the end of the games, the Siantou University Institute topped the edition by outperforming the other 23 public and private higher education institutions that participated in the games in various disciplines.

The Siantou Institute ranks first in Olympic sports with a total of 35 medals including 18 gold, eight silver, and nine bronze. The University of Yaoundé 1 comes in second place with 32 medals including 17 gold, seven silver, and seven bronze. The third place in the ranking goes to the University Institute of the Gulf of Guinea. The institution earned 30 medals including 14 gold, 11 silver, and five bronze.

In Paralympic sports, the University of Douala occupies the top spot on the podium. It is followed by the University of Yaoundé I and the University of Garoua. For specific awards, the fair-play delegation trophy is awarded to the University of Maroua, while Bianka University of Buea wins the most civic delegation trophy. The general fans club trophy is in the hands of the students of the University of Yaoundé I who demonstrated their commitment to cultural animation during these five days.
