Energy: AER draws inspiration from the Senegalese model to accelerate rural electrification

On a benchmarking mission in Dakar from June 1 to 3, 2026, a delegation from the Rural Electrification Agency (AER) held numerous discussions with key players in the Senegalese energy sector. Objective: to adopt best practices in renewable energies and rural electrification to strengthen national energy access strategies.

The Rural Electrification Agency (AER) continues to open itself to the most successful African experiences in energy access. Under the impetus of its Director General, Moussa Ousmanou, a delegation led by the Director of Studies, Cooperation and Partnership Development, Daniel Tarh Tongabiang, carried out a benchmarking mission in Dakar, Senegal, from June 1 to 3, 2026.



At the heart of this visit was a meeting with Professor Djouma Kobor, Director General of the National Agency for Renewable Energies (ANER). The discussions, extended by technical working sessions with the teams of the Senegalese institution, made it possible to explore mechanisms for promoting renewable energies and cooperation models likely to be adapted to local realities.

The AER delegation was also received by the Directorate General of Energy of the Senegalese Ministry of Energy, Petroleum and Mines, as well as by Jean Michel Sène, Director General of the Senegalese Rural Electrification Agency (ASER). Discussions focused on the challenges related to extending electricity access in rural areas and the solutions deployed to improve service to populations.

Finally, discussions were held with officials from Senelec, Senegal’s national electricity company. These meetings fostered an exchange of experiences around technical innovations, financing mechanisms, and institutional approaches that support the development of the energy sector.
For AER, this mission marks an additional step in consolidating strategic partnerships and seeking sustainable solutions capable of accelerating the electrification of rural areas.
