The work whose construction is nearing completion puts an end to the various fatal accidents often occurring during canoe crossings and will streamline exchanges between the two banks of the river.
The Basa’a, Mpoo, Bati populations in general and those of the Makak municipality are joyful and excited as the government officially puts into service the bridge over the Nyong River at Malombo. The structure ends their suffering and the risks incurred during the crossing of the river at this location.

On August 5, 2026, the Minister of Public Works, Emmanuel Nganou Djoumessi, inaugurated the 160-meter-long mixed steel-concrete infrastructure built by the company China First Highway Engineering Co -CFHEC-. At a cost of about 8.6 billion CFA francs, the bridge over the Nyong River at Malombo and its access roads were financed by the Public Investment Budget of the Ministry of Public Works. The structure includes two bidirectional lanes of 3.5 meters each with two sidewalks of one meter each as well as 960 meters of access roads.
The infrastructure, awaited for 60 years, facilitates economic exchanges, the movement of goods and people between the two banks of the river, and the bringing together of local communities. “For all these years, the populations were discouraged. Farming became subsistence farming. Now that the bridge is here, Makak will be able to supply Yaoundé, Makak will be able to supply Douala with agricultural products,” rejoiced the mayor of the Makak municipality during an interview granted to Crtv radio and broadcast on August 5, 2026. Jean Jacques Mbogol III expressed the wish that the modernization of road infrastructures continues in order to connect Makak to the metropolises and other localities.
