The Mfoundi High Court, at the end of the trial on August 18, 2026, sentenced Landry Batek Yebel to death for murdering his mother, Louisette Ngo Yebel, in 2024.

This is the decision that the justice system pronounced against Landry Batek Yebel, the young administrative secretary, graduate of the National School of Administration and Magistracy. The Mfoundi High Court delivered its verdict last Tuesday after a procedure that had been ongoing for about two years. After investigations, confrontations, and other procedures to gather evidence, the 25-year-old man was found guilty of the murder of his mother, Louisette Ngo Yebel, 47, journalist and communication expert at the Central African Forest Commission (Comifac).

The events date back to April 7, 2024. The mutilated lifeless body of the victim was found packed in two suitcases near a watercourse in the Etoa Meki neighborhood in Yaoundé. Following this grim discovery, investigations led the gendarmes to the victim’s son. He confessed and a reconstruction of the events was carried out.
The crime was committed in the Damas neighborhood in Yaoundé, at the family home. During a dispute over the disappearance of furniture purchased by the mother, the son suffocated her using a pillowcase. After the death, he cut up the body before packing it. To erase traces of the crime, he called on his friend who abandoned the victim’s vehicle in Soa.

The seriousness of the case led to the discovery that the young man had also, some time before, killed his grandmother. Without the case being made public. Sentenced to death for the murder of his mother, what remains to be done with the young man? The court pronounced a sentence provided by law. But it has not been applied since 1997. It is up to the competent authorities to decide how the decision will be executed. Previous death row inmates who were not executed remain in prison.
