Cameroun : 21,000 new HIV cases per year

The figure represents the annual incidence of HIV in the population aged between 15 and 49 years.

The results of the second Cameroon Population-based HIV Impact Assessment (CAMPHIA) survey, conducted between September 2024 and January 2025, present the updated epidemiological situation of HIV in Cameroon. According to this survey, the data of which was made public by the Minister of Public Health on February 2, 2026, the annual HIV incidence among people aged 15 to 49 is 0.15% compared to 0.24% in 2017, with 0.24% among women and 0.06% among men, who are four times more affected than women. Within the population, this result indicates approximately 21,000 new HIV cases per year.

Furthermore, the national HIV prevalence is 2.6% among people aged 15 to 49. The rate of affected women is 3.6%. And that of men is 1.6%. At the population level, this result indicates that approximately 503,000 people aged 15 and over are living with HIV. This prevalence is a decrease compared to the rate of 3.4% recorded at the end of the survey conducted in 2017. These national data for this age group nevertheless vary from one region to another. The Northern and Far North regions record a prevalence of 1.5%, while the Center region, excluding the city of Yaoundé, has the highest prevalence, 4.6%.

As for viral control among people living with HIV, the suppression rate is around 95% among people aged 55 and over; around 47.5% among young women aged 15 to 24, and 50.4% among men aged 25 to 34. To further bend the curve, the Minister of Public Health, Malachie Manaouda, advocates for intensified HIV screening targeting the most vulnerable groups, namely women, adolescents, and young people.
