
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres unequivocally condemned on Wednesday the massive strikes carried out by Israel across Lebanon earlier in the day, his spokesperson said.
“The Secretary-General strongly condemns the loss of civilian lives and is deeply alarmed by the increasingly heavy toll among the civilian population,” said Stéphane Dujarric in a statement, referring to the hundreds of civilians, including children, killed or injured by these strikes.

Ongoing military operations in Lebanon pose a serious risk to the ceasefire between the United States and Iran and to efforts to establish a lasting and comprehensive peace in the region, he added.
“The Secretary-General reiterates his call to all parties to immediately cease hostilities,” he said, emphasizing that international law must be respected at all times, that civilians and civilian objects must be protected at all times, and that attacks directed against them were unacceptable.

Stressing that there was no military solution to the conflict, Mr. Dujarric said the Secretary-General continued to call on all parties to use diplomatic channels and to reaffirm their commitment to the full implementation of Security Council Resolution 1701.
