Health alert in the South. In a statement signed on August 4, 2026, in Ebolowa, the Governor of the South Region, Félix Nguele Nguele, informs the population that the region has been officially in an Mpox epidemic since July 1, 2026.
Three Health Districts are particularly concerned: Kribi, Niété, and Ebolowa. The report states eleven (11) laboratory-confirmed cases,
seventy-nine (79) identified direct contact cases, and
two hundred forty-two (242) indirect contacts under monitoring.

The Governor recalls what the disease is. Mpox is transmitted “by contact, from animals (Monkeys, Rodents…) to humans, and from human to human.” Symptoms include skin rashes or lesions, fever, chills, severe headaches, muscle and back pain, fatigue, and swollen lymph nodes.

The communication comes a few days before the final phase of the University Games, scheduled from August 5 to 9, 2026, in the South Region. To prevent the spread, the population is invited to respect barrier measures:
Systematic hand washing, avoiding any direct contact with a person showing symptoms, avoiding handling wild animal carcasses, thoroughly cooking food, especially bushmeat

To reassure, the administrative authority emphasizes “the availability of health teams” and specifies that “clinical care for Mpox is free in all treatment centers.”

Health authorities therefore call for calm but also vigilance, especially with the expected influx for the University Games.
