Logone-Birni: the municipal council convened to elect a new mayor

The prefect of the Logone and Chari department convenes the municipal councillors for an extraordinary session to be held next Saturday, March 21.

The prefect, the state’s supervisory authority over the municipality, is convening the municipal council of the Logone Birni municipality for an extraordinary session next weekend. The agenda indicated by the administrative authority is to end the legal vacancy observed at the head of the municipality following the death of Mayor Abakar Brahim on January 21, 2026, after an illness.

Based on the provisions of the general code of decentralized local authorities, the prefect invites the municipal councillors to elect the new mayor and his deputies if necessary. The administrative authority asks the municipal councillors to take all necessary measures to participate in this civic meeting which will end the vacancy period within the municipality led by the ruling party.

The former mayor, from the Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement, died at a time when his second deputy, who had been reported missing, was being sought. Four days after the death of her superior, Fanné Ehmat Gargam reappeared while residents were already questioning the interim leadership and the stability of the town hall. The two successive events and facts, which sparked rumors of mysterious practices, did not, however, paralyze the municipal institution. As of next Saturday, the municipality will have a new executive at the end of the session.
