
The outgoing Congolese president, Denis Sassou Nguesso, declared himself a candidate for the presidential election of March 15 on Thursday, a Xinhua correspondent noted.

Denis Sassou Nguesso proclaimed this on February 5 during the launch of the first major agricultural fair in Congo, which will be held until February 15 at the Bambou-Mingali site located in the Ignié district, about 60 km north of Brazzaville.
“So directly, I will support the agricultural movement that I decided to launch in 2021. Therefore, I declare myself a candidate for the March presidential election,” he announced, responding to the question asked en masse by the crowd present at the ceremony.

In this election, the outgoing president will carry the colors of the presidential majority, which brings together eighteen political parties. These parties signed a joint declaration on February 2 supporting Denis Sassou Nguesso’s candidacy.
“We, political parties members of the presidential majority, signatories, reaffirm the will and the necessity of the unity of the forces supporting the action of President Denis Sassou Nguesso,” the declaration, read by the Secretary General of the Congolese Labor Party, Pierre Moussa, essentially stated.
