Gathered in Yaoundé at the initiative of UNICEF, parliamentarians, experts, and international partners called for stronger political commitment to make children’s rights a national priority in Cameroon.

In Yaoundé on May 7, 2026, the issue of child protection took center stage in discussions between the United Nations and Cameroonian parliamentarians. During a dialogue and advocacy session dedicated to children’s rights, Nouhoum Sangaré, Acting Regional Director of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights for Central and West Africa, representing the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Cameroon, Issa Sanogo, emphasized the urgency of sustained political mobilization.

“Children’s rights are not an option; they constitute a moral, political, and legal obligation,” he declared before an assembly including deputies, national human rights institutions, civil society organizations, and development partners.



Organized by UNICEF Cameroon, the meeting aimed to strengthen child protection mechanisms and encourage better consideration of international commitments in national public policies.
The discussions particularly emphasized the strategic role of Parliament in adopting protective laws, overseeing public action, and allocating resources suited to children’s needs.
