Contrary to rumors circulating in recent days, no official decision has been made regarding a change of host country for the TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations 2026. Morocco remains, at this stage, the organizer designated by CAF.

Following statements made at the Hollywoodbets Super League Awards, the South African Department of Sports, Arts and Culture issued a press release on February 1, 2026, to clarify the South African government’s position on the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

The ministry recalls that Morocco officially remains the host country for the competition, as designated by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). No formal procedure has been initiated by the continental body for a possible transfer of organization to another country.

A willingness in principle, without official commitment

However, South Africa has confirmed its willingness to support CAF if alternative arrangements become necessary. This position is part of preliminary discussions held by CAF, which aim to anticipate various scenarios to ensure the smooth running of its competitions.

The ministry nevertheless specifies that a change of host country could only occur after several mandatory steps, including:

official notification from CAF; approval from the relevant government authorities; validation of host cities and sports infrastructure; assessment of accommodation and transport capacity; finalization of the required state guarantees.

According to the press release, the deputy minister’s statements were misinterpreted:

“They primarily reflect South Africa’s historical commitment to African football and confidence in its recognized expertise in organizing major sporting events. They do not in any way constitute an official confirmation of hosting the tournament.”

The ministry finally indicates that, in collaboration with the South African Football Association (SAFA) and various stakeholders, discussions with CAF will continue.

“Any official announcement will only be made once the procedures are completed and a decision is formally adopted,” concludes the government authority.

The TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations 2026 is scheduled from March 17 to April 3, 2026, in Morocco. The draw for the group stages already took place during the last men’s Africa Cup of Nations in December 2025.
