This international distinction comes a few weeks before the sovereign pontiff’s visit to Cameroon and highlights African expertise in major global economic and social debates.
The Vatican announced, on March 9, 2026, the appointment of Cameroonian economist Vera Songwe as an ordinary member of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences. The decision was made by Pope Leo XIV, who thus continues the mission of this Holy See institution consisting of gathering renowned experts to reflect on the major economic, social, and political issues of the contemporary world.
A recognized figure in international economic governance, Vera Songwe distinguished herself at the head of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), where she served as executive secretary. During her career, she played a major role in reflections on the economic transformation of the African continent, development financing, and public policies.
Currently, the Cameroonian economist co-chairs an international panel of experts dedicated to climate finance, a field that has become central to global discussions on energy transition and the fight against climate change.
Her appointment to the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences comes a few weeks before the Pope’s visit to Cameroon, scheduled for April 15 to 18, 2026. This apostolic journey, highly anticipated by the faithful and the country’s authorities, is expected to be marked by meetings with religious and political leaders and civil society actors.
The appointment of Vera Songwe appears for many as a strong symbol of the role and influence of Cameroonian women in international spheres of decision-making and reflection.
