A press release from the political bureau of the African Movement for New Independence and Democracy is categorical on this matter.

The African Movement for New Independence and Democracy (Manidem) does not admit the government of Cameroon to the funeral of its late president Anicet Ekane. In a press release dated March 16 and signed on behalf of the political bureau by Vice-President Valentin Dongmo fils, the political party announces to the public “that no place is reserved for the government of the Republic of Kamerun throughout the funeral of President Anicet Ekane”. Furthermore, the political formation insists by stating that “no contribution of any kind from the Yaoundé power will be accepted”. Through the same communication, Manidem warns anyone who goes against this decision.

The stance adopted by the political party aims to reject any participation by the government of Cameroon in the organization of Anicet Ekane’s funeral. Although the communication does not specify the reasons for the decision, it reinforces the distance between the public authorities, the leadership, and the militants of Manidem, as well as the companions, supporters, and political friends of Anicet Ekane. The distance, clearly visible since the arrest and detention of the opponent, has taken an irreversible turn since his death in detention.

The political party as well as the opposition camp formed around the president of Manidem accuse the Yaoundé regime of being responsible for his death, of having confiscated his body initially before releasing it later. The same camp questions the result of the autopsy performed and the investigation conducted to establish the causes of his death. The conclusion of the results communicated by the Ministry of Defense reports a “natural death”. Due to these strained relations between the regime and the political and nuclear families of the deceased, voices were already being raised during the transfer of the remains to Douala to denounce the presence around the coffin of people designated by the authorities to facilitate logistics.
