Following a statement by the elected representative of the nation this morning regarding the majority in parliament, the MRC communications secretary attempts to set her straight.

The almost obvious validation of the infinite extension of the mandate of municipal councilors by parliament, as well as the validation of the creation of a vice-president appointed by the president, are fueling contradictory reactions. This morning, MP Nourane Foster revisited her speech on April 04 in the chamber when she asked the Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji, to review the bill aimed at amending Article 170 of the electoral code.

The amendment intends to give the President of the Republic the power to extend the mandate of municipal councilors indefinitely. ‘’We must limit the mandate of municipal councilors’’, she told the minister, reiterating ‘’let us be responsible towards the people’’. However, despite the disagreements expressed by opposition MPs, the text was validated due to the strength of the majority held by the ruling party. Nourane Foster then maintains that ‘’those who prevented the people from having a majority must be held responsible and not those who try to make their voices heard with a glaring minority’’.

Joseph Emmanuel Ateba, an official of the Movement for the Renaissance of Cameroon, does not share this position. He says he forgives the ‘’naivety and ignorance’’ of the MP and all those who think like her. According to the MRC communications secretary, those who have prevented the people from having a majority in the Assembly for 30 years are the same ones who stole the people’s victory in 1992, stole the people’s victory in 2018, disqualified the people’s candidate in 2025, snatched the people’s victory in 2025, took away the people’s power to choose through the infinite extensions of the mandates of elected officials, and are today preparing to designate a President of the Republic without the people’s opinion’’. He recommends that leaders reflect on how to rid Cameroon ‘’of the cartel that holds it hostage’’.

The debate is currently taking place while CPDM MPs are in the majority in the National Assembly and CPDM senators occupy 94% of the Senate. Any legal initiative by the government can only benefit from the validation of parliament.
