The torrential rains that can hit Cameroon’s economic capital during the months of June to August 2026 have triggered the activation of the Douala Urban Community’s alert system for the population. The city’s mayor, Roger Mbassa Ndine, reminds residents that during this period, floods, water overflows, and runoff waters can cause significant damage in the city.

As a preventive measure, the municipal authority asks residents to be vigilant, to limit non-essential travel during heavy rains, and to avoid crossing runoff waters. Residents would also benefit from staying away from risk areas, especially ensuring the safety of children, the elderly, and vulnerable people.
He mobilizes opinion leaders to relay the awareness message and to promote citizen actions for cleaning, dredging, and maintaining the surroundings of homes and neighborhoods. The mayor thus calls on traditional chiefs, community leaders, neighborhood leaders, associations, local development committees, as well as the city’s active forces to take action. Their activity will join operations for dredging, maintaining drains, clearing sanitation structures, and removing blockages.

According to forecasts from the National Observatory on Climate Change for the second decade of July, the city of Douala is exposed to thunderstorms, torrential, occasional, and successive long-lasting rains associated with drainage problems. These rains can cause floods and landslides. In recent days, two buildings have collapsed in the city, causing the death of at least seven people.
