
A “crackdown” operation carried out over two weeks under the impetus of gendarmerie region no. 1 led to the arrest of several dozen suspects in neighborhoods known to be dangerous in the capital and peripheral areas.
Dozens of young people suspected of disturbing the peace and security of residents in sensitive neighborhoods of the capital are in the hands of the national gendarmerie. The law enforcement forces carried out an operation called “Crackdown” in the areas of Nkometou at the northern entrance of the capital, the neighborhoods of Olembe, Mesassi, Nkolondom among others.

Proceeding with raids following intelligence, the teams combed the areas occupied by alleged criminals before apprehending about twenty suspects. They operated day and night, undermining the safety of people and their property through assaults, thefts, and various acts of delinquency.
Aged 16 to 40, they are involved in acts of assault, intentional homicides, drug trafficking. The operations were conducted on the ground for 15 days under the leadership of Lieutenant Colonel Penda and under the supervision of Brigadier General Elias Toungue, commander of gendarmerie region no. 1. They also resulted in the seizure of several kilograms of narcotics, bladed weapons, as well as mobile phones.

The arrested suspects were taken to the gendarmerie’s interrogation and detention facilities. They will subsequently be referred to the prosecutor’s office for further judicial proceedings. Their arrest is a sign of relief for residents of these neighborhoods forced into fear and restrictions on some of their freedoms due to insecurity before the intervention of law enforcement forces.
