The Minister of Environment HELE Pierre presided over the official ceremony of the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer on September 16, 2026, held this year under the theme “Global Action for a Cooler Planet”.

Yaoundé celebrates ozone. The Minister in charge of the Environment, HELE Pierre, presided over the official commemorative ceremony of the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer on Wednesday, September 16, 2026.
Located between 20 and 50 km altitude, the ozone layer plays a vital role: it filters ultraviolet rays. Without it, excessive exposure would cause cancers, eye diseases, weakening of the immune system, and alterations of terrestrial and aquatic biogeochemical cycles.
Cameroon ratified the Vienna Convention and its Montreal Protocol as early as August 30, 1989. Since then, the country has increased awareness, control, and regulation.
This year, MINEPDED carried out six major actions: the elimination of 5% of Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFC-22), training of refrigeration technicians on ozone-friendly best practices, training of customs officers and inspectors on the control of equipment containing CFCs, halons, and methyl bromide, updating the licensing and quota system, the joint national inventory by MINEPDED/MINSANTE on refrigeration equipment in hospitals, and the rehabilitation of Refrigeration and Air Conditioning workshops at the Centers of Excellence in Douala and Limbe.
A concrete commitment to the climate.
