Yango Ride, a ride-hailing service owned by the global technology group Yango Group, today published the regional results of its 2024–2025 Safety Report, detailing the technologies and support systems implemented to make mobility safer for passengers and partner drivers across Africa, including Cameroon.

In July 2025, Yango partnered with the city halls of Douala and Yaoundé to organize two events dedicated to driver safety and well-being, bringing together more than 100 partner drivers in both cities. Each session combined training on the safety features integrated into the app and free health check-ups for partner drivers, fostering direct dialogue between drivers, municipal authorities, and Yango safety experts. Yango confirmed that a similar event focused on driver safety and well-being will be held again in September 2026, thus extending the program’s reach in Cameroon.

The events organized in Cameroon are part of a broader continental dynamic. Over the 2024–2025 period, the deployment of new driving style analysis and speed control measures led to a 38% decrease in reported dangerous driving incidents across the Africa region, dropping from 13.05 to 8.08 incidents per million trips. Comparable decreases were recorded in Ivory Coast (35%), Zambia (49%), Angola (34%), and Senegal (33%) — the same safety system now governing Yango’s activities in Cameroon.

With the continued deployment of call privacy protection technologies, complaints related to post-ride contacts also declined in several African markets: -11% in Ivory Coast, -22% in Angola, -8% in Senegal, and -4% in Zambia. Emergency assistance is available 24/7 across all markets where Yango operates, including Cameroon: the technology identifies urgent requests, while trained specialists remain responsible for analyzing situations and making decisions. In 90% of urgent cases worldwide, a trained specialist aims to establish first contact within 5 minutes.

Technology present at every stage of the ride

These results reflect a safety system that intervenes before, during, and after every ride on the Yango platform, including in Cameroon.

Before the start of a ride, identity and document verification — including driver’s license checks, recurring verification selfies, and anti-fraud systems — determines who can access the service.

During the ride, passengers and partner drivers can access a Safety Center allowing them to share their route with trusted contacts, contact emergency assistance in case of conflict, and use the SOS button to reach local emergency services.

Driving style analysis and GPS speed monitoring identify repeated risky behaviors and trigger a proportionate response, from warnings to removal from the platform. After each ride, partner drivers and passengers can rate each other, which feeds their profile.

Calls via the app keep communications within protected channels, without either party having to share their personal number.

“A 38% decrease in dangerous driving incidents across Africa is not the result of a single feature or a solution specific to one market: it is the result of technology applied consistently, combined with the expertise and local knowledge of our teams in each country. This same system applies before, during, and after every ride, wherever we operate, and this type of result is why we continue to invest in prevention, detection, and assistance to offer a better experience to all our users,”
— Roman Karlash, CEO of Yango Ride

Beyond the app: partnerships with local authorities in Cameroon

In Cameroon, Yango’s safety system goes beyond the app through direct partnerships with public institutions. The events held in July 2025 in Douala and Yaoundé, in cooperation with the municipal authorities of both cities, are part of an approach found elsewhere on the continent: in Angola, a memorandum of understanding with the Integrated Public Security Center establishes a structured cooperation framework on relevant incidents, while in Zambia, the Safer Journeys to School initiative introduced road safety education and road improvements affecting about 8,000 students in five schools in Lusaka.

Methodological note: Figures related to serious traffic violations and dangerous driving incidents are based on classified passenger reports submitted via channels integrated into the app. Rates are normalized per million trips to allow comparison between periods and regions. Data specific to Cameroon were not part of this reporting cycle; regional figures for Africa are presented as the applicable reference.
