The Cameroonian government officially launched the Pandemic Fund on its territory on Wednesday, a multisectoral financing mechanism aimed at strengthening the country’s capacity to prevent, prepare for, and respond to health emergencies. The ceremony was presided over by the Minister of Public Health, Manaouda Malachie, reported CRTV, the state media. According to Manaouda Malachie, a prepared country, better equipped with laboratories, trained staff, and administrations, is a country that will effectively face an epidemic.
Present in 128 countries, the Pandemic Fund mobilizes financing of 23.5 million dollars for Cameroon to support a project based on the “One Health” approach, which combines human health, animal health, and ecosystem health.
The interventions will cover the ten regions of the country, with particular attention given to 42 priority health districts. They will aim notably to strengthen disease surveillance, early warning systems, laboratory capacities, health personnel training, health emergency coordination, as well as resource mobilization.
The project is implemented with the support of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the World Bank, and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
Created in 2022 in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Pandemic Fund aims to address the shortcomings highlighted by this pandemic and help countries better anticipate health emergencies.
