A fully protected species of class A, like gorillas, elephants, lions, giraffes…, the pangolin appears in three protected endangered species, namely the black-bellied pangolin, the white-bellied pangolin, and the giant pangolin. It is listed among the species that Cameroonian legislation prohibits from killing, capturing, holding, selling, or transporting, except with prior authorization from the Ministry of Forests and Wildlife. Offenders of this legal protection framework face criminal penalties including prison sentences of 15 to 20 years and fines of 20 to 50 million FCFA.
