These consultations bring together on July 14 in Yaoundé the members of the government of Cameroon, the Central African Republic, and the UNHCR. The goal is to finalize the practical arrangements for the resumption of voluntary repatriations.
The Cameroonian government, that of the Central African Republic, and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees are holding a consultation meeting this Tuesday in Yaoundé. The discussions focus on the resumption of the voluntary repatriation process of Central African refugees living in Cameroon. The meeting, which takes place at the Hilton Hotel in Yaoundé, has as its main activity the adoption of the operational document concerning the practical modalities of voluntary repatriation.

Participating in the discussions are the Cameroonian Minister of Territorial Administration Paul Atanga Nji, the Central African Minister of Humanitarian Action, Solidarity and National Reconciliation, Josiane Lina Bemaka-Soui, and a UNHCR delegation led by William S. Chemaly, the new UNHCR representative in the CAR.
Suspended towards the end of 2025, the voluntary repatriation process of Central African refugees is about to be relaunched. On the sidelines of the intergovernmental meeting, the technical working group of the Cameroon-UNHCR-CAR tripartite commission will meet. The overall aim is to fine-tune the technical modalities for repatriating the next contingents of refugees.

Prior to Tuesday’s meetings, the UNHCR resident representative in Cameroon announced last May the repatriation of 10,000 to 20,000 Central African refugees to the CAR this year. The repatriation of the last contingent containing 523 refugees brings the number of voluntary refugees who have returned to their country of origin since the launch of the repatriation process in 2019 to more than 22,000. According to UNHCR statistics, more than 332,000 Central African refugees still live in Cameroon and are located in the East, Adamawa, and North regions.
