The remains of the politician, claimed for months by his family and lawyers, will soon be buried following the lifting of judicial restrictions.

The public has learned from the lawyers of Anicet Ekane’s beneficiaries that the government commissioner at the Yaoundé military tribunal has ordered the lifting of the restrictions he had imposed on the politician’s remains. The information is also contained in a correspondence from Me Hippolyte Meli addressed to the director general of the Yaoundé Central Hospital morgue, where the body has been kept since December 1, 2025, the date of the death of the president of Manidem.

In this correspondence, the lawyer already anticipates the taking effect of the government commissioner’s decision to release the remains. Me Meli informs the director general that the widow of the deceased, Jeanne Sogue, will take responsibility for this body in storage and in the name and on behalf of the beneficiaries; she will also take charge of the body’s storage costs starting from February 23, 2026, until its placement in the coffin according to the program that the family will decide.

Thus, the remains of Anicet Ekane, whom his comrades and supporters already call a national hero, spent 85 days under seal. This is something the lawyers and his biological and political families did not accept. On three occasions already, the beneficiaries’ lawyers have petitioned the judicial authorities to request the lifting of the seals and the release of the body. According to Me Meli, “the morgue is neither a place of detention nor a place suitable for a final resting place. It is only a place of preservation, a transitory passage to the final resting place.” However, their demands regarding the release of the remains had not found a favorable response from the institutions.

After 85 days, it is nevertheless a “happy ending” for these lawyers. The president of Manidem Anicet Ekane, a supporter of Maurice Kamto and Issa Tchiroma Bakary in the last presidential election, “has finally seen his right to a final resting place recognized and is finally authorized to join his ancestors,” said Me Hyppolite Meli and Me Emmanuel Simh. The lifting of the seals occurred a few days after the president of the MRC, Maurice Kamto, joined the family and lawyers in calling for the release of the body and its return to the family for burial. For the moment, the effectiveness of the lifting of the seals and the organization of the funeral remain.
