The refusal of the Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji, calls into question the legitimacy of the restoration of Maurice Kamto as president of the Movement for the Renaissance of Cameroon.
The internal problems dividing the militants and leaders of the Movement for the Renaissance of Cameroon enter a new phase. While the judiciary is handling the case contesting the exclusion of founding member Thierry Okala Ebode from the party, the Minister of Territorial Administration exposes yet another flaw contributing to weakening the party. Paul Atanga Nji refuses to validate the resolutions of the MRC convention held on December 21, 2025. In a letter addressed to Thierry Joseph Okala Ebode dated August 19, 2026, “The MINAT did not deem it appropriate to acknowledge the work of the extraordinary MRC Convention of December 21, 2025.”

Without specifying the reason, the government member simply refers to the legal basis, namely Article 3 of Law No. 90/055 of December 19, 1990, governing public meetings and demonstrations. In responding to the “MRC board member” declared excluded by the party on November 7, 2025, the MINAT letter hides the reason and implications behind the refusal to acknowledge the resolutions.
Regarding the reason, the minister invokes Article 3, paragraph 2 of the 1990 law which subjects public meetings to a prior declaration, which must be made to the sub-prefect of the territory where the meeting is held. The December 21 convention was held via videoconference due to the amendment of the party’s statutes, which, according to the leaders, was communicated to the administrative authority.

As for the implications, the refusal to acknowledge the resolutions has consequences on the said resolutions and on the convention itself. It casts doubt on the legitimacy of the convention as well as on the acts taken during it. The resolutions concern the amendment of the party’s texts, statutes, and internal regulations, the election of the national leaders of the political formation. Maurice Kamto was reinstated as head of the MRC with 95.44% of the votes. The refusal to acknowledge also implies non-recognition of this election as well as of the opposition leader as national president of the party by the Cameroonian administration. In a response communication, the party declares that the Minat letter is “an attempt at destabilization” which it strongly condemns. According to the MRC, any objective observer can see that the RDPC regime is afraid and panics before it. With the approach of municipal and legislative elections, the party’s board asks militants to calmly prepare for the deadlines.
