Gathered on August 7, 2026, in Batchenga under the presidency of Minister Georges ELANGA OBAM, FEICOM, CAMWATER, and local authorities signed several agreements aimed at accelerating water supply and sanitation across the country.
In the presence of Minister Gaston ELOUNDOU ESSOMBA, the meeting is part of the 15th African Decentralization Day themed around strengthening local powers for sustainable access to water according to Agenda 2063.

Water must no longer be a luxury. This is the message emphasized in Batchenga. The Minister of Decentralization and Local Development, Georges ELANGA OBAM, chaired a high-level consultation bringing together FEICOM, CAMWATER, regional and local authorities. At the heart of the discussions: intensifying cooperation to provide every municipality with drinking water and decent sanitation infrastructure.
The Special Fund for Equipment and Intercommunal Intervention highlighted its major investments. On the agenda: water fountains, boreholes, and storage infrastructure already deployed or underway across the country. FEICOM confirms its role as the financial arm of municipalities in the water sector.
On its side, CAMWATER committed to “providing quality water at an affordable cost.” But the national utility also calls on the population to be responsible: “protect the network against illegal connections and fraud.” Without discipline, it is warned, efforts will be in vain.

The meeting resulted in concrete agreements. Partnership agreements were initialed between CAMWATER and several local authorities: the South Regional Council, the urban communities of Bamenda and Maroua, as well as the municipalities of Dizangué and Abong-Mbang. The idea is to pool technical resources, funding, and local expertise.
Organized in the presence of the Minister of Water and Energy, Gaston ELOUNDOU ESSOMBA, this session fits within a dual framework. It concerns the celebrations of the 15th African Decentralization and Local Development Day focused on “strengthening local powers for sustainable access to water according to Agenda 2063,” coupled with the 9th African Civil Status Day.
For Georges ELANGA OBAM, decentralization must be visible. And it starts with the tap. By bringing FEICOM, CAMWATER, and mayors closer, the government is betting on local management to meet the water challenge in Cameroon.
