Yaoundé: the DEEP-WATER program strengthens teachers' capacities on water and climate challenges

From May 28 to 30, 2026, primary and secondary school teachers participated in a training session in Yaoundé dedicated to water issues, climate change, and ecological responsibility. An initiative led by researchers and educational partners to promote a scientific culture in the service of sustainable development.

Understanding the issues related to water and climate also passes through schools. It is with this perspective that a training session was held in Yaoundé from May 28 to 30, 2026, aimed at primary and secondary school teachers as part of the DEEP-WATER program. The program, which included a field visit to Camwater, aims to strengthen educators’ expertise on aquifers, water treatment, and environmental preservation.

The initiative was led by the JEAI DELO teams, including Prof. Alessandra Ribodetti, Florence Bigot-Cormier, and Prof. Lionel Mbida, in collaboration with teachers from the Yaoundé Bilingual Application High School and the Education Committee of the European Geosciences Union (EGU).



The launch ceremony saw the participation of the IRD representative in Cameroon, Dr. Odile Ouwe Missi Oukem. Several presentations highlighted the EGU’s support for the project, the missions of JEAI DELO, as well as the activities of the IRD Youth Club “Weather-Water-Horizon”.

In her speech, the IRD representative praised the scientific and educational momentum developed around JEAI DELO. She emphasized the importance of collaboration between researchers and educators to strengthen local skills and promote the appropriation of scientific knowledge in the face of environmental challenges.
Beyond technical teachings, the meeting provided a framework for exchanges and sharing experiences, confirming the central role of education in raising awareness among young generations about water and climate issues.
