The party of the late Anicet Ekane has made a statement public to announce to the public the reason for this break which occurs in the context of the organization of the latter’s funeral.

The alliance through which Issa Tchiroma Bakary was propelled to second place in the official results of the 2025 presidential election is reaching its final stage. At least, this is what a statement from the political bureau of the African Movement for New Independence and Democracy (Manidem) dated May 6, 2026, suggests. According to this document, the divorce is established between the political party of the late Anicet Ekane, which supported Issa Tchiroma’s candidacy within the framework of the Union for Change 2025, and the opposition candidate ranked second at the end of the vote.

In a firm tone, the signatories of the Manidem statement speak of the “final act of breaking the agreement we believed we had with Mr. TCHIROMA within the framework of the Union for Change,” it can be read. The political formation clarifies the reason for the break. Issa Tchiroma Bakary published on May 6 the funeral program of the Manidem president Anicet Ekane. He called on the public to be “numerous to accompany this national hero.” This call resonates at Manidem as the echo of betrayal at a sensitive moment.

The party denounces having been excluded from the organization of its president’s funeral, accusing the Rdpc of being behind it after having been the cause of the latter’s death. It considers Tchiroma’s call as the “official confirmation” of his support for “the operation to destroy the party undertaken by the Rdpc and many political actors” since Maurice Kamto’s inauguration at the last presidential election.

Also, Tchiroma’s May 6 publication is just the last straw according to Manidem. The political formation also deplores the communication breakdown by Issa Tchiroma since the arrest of Anicet Ekane followed by his death in custody. This foreshadowed the deterioration of relations between this political leader and the allied party.

If the situation is at this point, it is because Manidem has refrained from any participation in the funeral of its late president since the judge entrusted the organization of the said funeral to Anicet Ekane’s son. Similarly, while the party asks change supporters not to take part “in the humiliation of Ekane by participating in ceremonies organized by the RDPC,” Tchiroma calls for the opposite. On the other hand, Maurice Kamto’s MRC expressed its solidarity with Manidem in the context of this funeral, deciding not to participate. All things considered, Tchiroma has not yet addressed the break of the agreement. It therefore remains here mentioned unilaterally by Manidem.
