
Flash floods caused by heavy rains that hit several regions of Kenya have left 42 people dead across the country, the government said.
“A total of 42 deaths have been reported and confirmed by national police services across the country as of March 8, 2026,” said Geoffrey Ruku, Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, Human Capital Development and Special Programs in a statement released Sunday in Nairobi, the capital.

In addition to these tragic losses of life, Mr. Ruku indicated that significant damage had been reported to infrastructure and livelihoods, including 172 vehicles swept away by the waters.
Heavy rains on Friday night caused flooding in several parts of Nairobi and its surroundings, leading to road closures, property damage, population displacement and suffering among affected communities.

The Kenyan meteorological service has forecast further torrential rains and urged residents to exercise extreme caution to avoid further loss of life.
“The government wishes to assure the public that all response agencies remain fully mobilized and on high alert to protect lives, support affected communities and restore the normal situation as quickly as possible,” said Mr. Ruku.
