Load shedding persists and tensions over electricity production are penalizing households and businesses; the government is increasing consultations to accelerate investments in the energy and water sector.

On Monday, March 02, 2026, the Minister of Water and Energy, Gaston Eloundou Essomba, received in audience in Yaoundé Ramon Ynaraja, Head of the regional representation of the European Investment Bank (EIB) for Central Africa.
This meeting takes place in a context marked by recurring power outages, rapidly growing demand, and aging infrastructure. Production shortfalls, combined with transmission and distribution difficulties, continue to affect the competitiveness of businesses and the daily lives of the population, in Douala as well as in Yaoundé and several inland cities.
During the discussions, the two officials reviewed projects financed or co-financed by the EIB in the water and energy sub-sectors. Hydroelectric dams, network reinforcement, and improved access to drinking water are among the government’s strategic priorities to stabilize supply and reduce load shedding.
Mr. Ramon Ynaraja reiterated the European institution’s availability to support the ministry in the implementation of new structural projects. For the MINEE, this partnership constitutes an essential lever to mobilize concessional financing and accelerate the modernization of the sector.
Faced with the energy emergency, the authorities are thus relying on a strengthening of international cooperation to support the sustainable transformation of the Cameroonian electrical system.
