Cross-border smuggling: Customs crackdown in the Extreme North

The Customs Sector of this Region announced the seizure of a significant shipment of products fraudulently introduced from Nigeria. The operation, carried out during the night from Wednesday, May 13 to Thursday, May 14, 2026, by the Maroua Mobile Customs Brigade, confirms the tightening of border controls against the circulation of illicit goods and products unfit for consumption.

In a nighttime operation conducted during the night of May 13 to 14, 2026, by the elements of the Maroua Mobile Customs Brigade, the Customs Sector of the Far North intercepted a significant shipment of goods smuggled from neighboring Nigeria. A seizure that the customs administration presents as “a new blow to fraudulent networks supplying local markets.”

The shipment included 390 cartons of whisky in 5.5-kilogram sachets each, representing nearly 52,000 sachets intended for clandestine consumption. The agents also seized 5,400 packs of expired biscuits as well as 39 pallets of beer, each containing 24 units.



For the Far North Customs Sector, this operation highlights “the health and economic dangers related to smuggling,” especially with the introduction of products escaping regulatory controls. The seized expired biscuits posed a direct risk to consumers.

The customs authorities assure that “surveillance remains permanent at the borders and within the national territory.” A strategy aimed at curbing fraud networks and strengthening the protection of the national economy.
