University of Dschang: Green hydrogen at the heart of a conference on energy sovereignty

The University of Dschang explores the energy future of Cameroon. Gathered on September 8, 2026, at the University Digital Development Center, researchers, decision-makers, and investors are working on “The future of green hydrogen for sustainable energy development.”

Scientific enthusiasm is underway in Dschang. The Faculty of Sciences at the University of Dschang opened an international conference dedicated to green hydrogen, a future energy vector for Cameroon, on September 8.



Organized by DAAD German Academic Exchange Service through the Department of Renewable Energies, the meeting is chaired by Prof. Clautilde Mofor, Dean of the Faculty, representing the Rector. It is part of the DAAD alumni network which has supported cooperation with Dschang for years.
A multidisciplinary platform par excellence, it brings together researchers, engineers, public decision-makers, private operators, investors, students, and civil society. A strategic alliance at a time when Cameroon seeks to improve energy access and reduce its dependence on fossil fuels.

While hydroelectricity remains predominant, solar, wind, and biomass remain marginal despite huge potential. The government is deploying solar power plants and photovoltaic solutions, but instability and the cost of thermal energy hinder industrialization.

Green hydrogen, produced by water electrolysis using renewable electricity, appears as the solution: storable, transportable, convertible via fuel cells for industry, transport, and storage.

Cameroon has assets: strong sunshine, abundant water resources, Atlantic coastline, wind and biomass deposits. Challenges remain: production cost, infrastructure deficit, absence of dedicated regulatory framework.

Four axes structure the work: materials for sustainable development, production and valorization of green hydrogen, energy policies, and sustainable production.

The inaugural lecture was given by Prof. Tchaya Guy Bertrand, Head of Department. The local committee is chaired by Prof. Christian Kenfack Sadem.
