Thunderbolt in the Cameroonian political scene. In a letter dated September 8, 2026, in Yaoundé and published a few minutes ago on his certified Facebook page, Prof. Maurice Kamto announces his resignation from the position of national president of the MRC.
The letter, one page long, is addressed to the board of the Movement for the Renaissance of Cameroon. “I hereby inform you that in the supreme interest of our party, its many militants and supporters, and the People of Change in general, I have decided to resign from the position of National President of the Movement for the Renaissance of Cameroon (MRC). This decision takes effect as of today.”

The document bears the party’s seal with the handwritten note “Received on 09/08/2026” and a signature. The letter begins with the phrase that has become his trademark: “Dear Political Friends”.
If confirmed, this resignation paradoxically comes at a time when all federations reaffirmed their loyalty following the extraordinary convention of December 21, 2025, which had brought him back to the head of the party.
In his letter, Kamto invokes “the supreme interest of the party” without further details on his motivations or the future of his political commitment.

His first vice-president, Mamadou Mota, also submits his resignation to the party’s secretary general. In his letter, he announces his resignation with “immediate effect.” A decision “carefully considered and dictated exclusively by the supreme interest of our party in the face of the harassment and oppression exerted by the regime against me,” he declares. In the statement of reasons he presents, he refuses to be “the instrument” used to weaken the party or block its progress. He says he deprives the regime of a focus point allowing the movement to pursue its objectives.
