The national president of the Cameroonian Party for National Reconciliation, Deputy Cabral Libii, recounts in a few lines the last moments spent with his former chamber president.

Cavayé Yeguié Djibril died on May 6, 2026, in his village Mada after 34 years at the head of the National Assembly of Cameroon. He was buried the same day, in his village, in accordance with Muslim tradition. A pillar of the regime in the north, the one who entered parliament in 1970 leaves an indelible mark on the people and personalities who knew him during his lifetime. After stepping down from the chair in March 2026, I went to pay him a courtesy visit at his residence, then more spacious, just to tell him in person the deep respect I held for the illustrious parliamentarian he was, and the honor it had been for me to have worked in the National Assembly Office under his authority.

As he did whenever he had the chance, he sent me a little jab about my presidential ambition, then advised me to hold on and be patient.

Reclining on that iconic armchair on the porch of his residence, surrounded by a few close ones, faced with my unexpected gesture of recognition, which contrasted with the atmosphere of parliamentary work both during our rare office meetings and in the hemicycle, he gave me a look full of astonishment and kindness, and a handshake visibly trembling with emotion and probably sincerely warm.
