Cameroon: the MRC stands in solidarity with Manidem, distances itself from the organization of Anicet Ekane's funeral

The Movement for the Renaissance of Cameroon (MRC) justifies its decision by the exclusion of Manidem from organizing the funeral of its president.

The Movement for the Renaissance of Cameroon (MRC) will not participate in the organization of the funeral of the late president of the African Movement for New Independence and Democracy. The decision made public by a statement dated May 5, 2026, stems from the confirmation of the exclusion of Manidem from organizing the said funeral.

The party chaired by Maurice Kamto announces this decision to the public with “regret.” It recalls that Manidem allied with the MRC during the presidential election of October 12, 2025, by endorsing its candidate Maurice Kamto. The party does not intend to break ties with Manidem, a political formation that extended a hand during a sensitive moment in the country’s political life. A moment when the noose was tightening around the politician considered the opposition leader on the eve of an election that was supposed to mark the beginning of a new era at the top of the State. But an election whose official results defied the opposition’s predictions, results whose contestation led to the imprisonment of some opposition figures including Anicet Ekane, who died in detention.

At the time his final journey begins and following a court decision entrusting the organization of his funeral to his eldest son Muna Ekane, who set the tone during a press conference in Douala, the MRC expresses its solidarity with Manidem, the political formation chaired by the deceased. And that the latter, during his lifetime, designated as the main actor in organizing his funeral according to an audio document shared by his close associates but not authenticated. While both political formations are excluded from organizing the funeral, only their presence remains during the stages of the said funeral.
