Cameroon: the national gendarmerie strengthens measures against gender-based violence

A message from the Secretary of State for Defense in charge of the Gendarmerie, Galax Etoga, enacts new measures to strengthen the repressive framework against those who commit acts of violence against vulnerable people.

Vulnerable people, specifically women, children, and the elderly, will benefit from reinforced protection from the national gendarmerie. The Secretary of State for Defense, Galax Yves Etoga, prescribes new measures aimed at tracking down and punishing the perpetrators of violence against these vulnerable people, who are increasingly victims of criminal acts in Cameroonian society.

In a message addressed to his collaborators, the head of the national gendarmerie prescribes diligence and proactivity to the heads of units in charge of the judicial police. The goal is to accelerate the judicial procedures opened to repress acts of violence against these categories of people. These same officials are called upon to ensure the compilation of complete and solid files for prosecution; ensure the protection and confidentiality of victims throughout the procedure. The SED also requests that the competent social services be systematically informed of all proven cases of distress for psychosocial care.

The enactment of these measures comes at a time when criminal acts targeting women, children, and the elderly are increasing. Every week, cases of child murder, particularly girls, or women are reported, sparking general indignation as well as pain within the families of the victims. Most of whom turn to the authorities for justice to be served. At the same time, the existing repressive system seems no longer to worry or deter the perpetrators who continue their dirty work.
