On the occasion of International Mathematics Day, the best students of Ngaoundéré are invited to participate in an academic competition intended to encourage a passion for science and innovation.

International Mathematics Day is celebrated on March 14, 2026. To mark the occasion, a mathematics olympiad is planned at the Lycée Classique et Moderne de Ngaoundéré. The best students from the city and surrounding establishments are invited to take part in this academic competition which will begin at 7h30.

The initiative aims to promote scientific talents and encourage excellence in a discipline considered essential for education, innovation, and the development of Cameroon.
This activity is part of International Mathematics Day, established by UNESCO and celebrated every year on the same date. The 2026 edition is placed under the theme “Mathematics and Hope” (Mathematics and Hope), a message that highlights the role of this science in the search for solutions to major global challenges, including climate change, energy management, or sustainable development.
March 14 also corresponds to World Pi Day, in reference to the famous number π whose approximation 3,14 corresponds to the Anglo-Saxon notation of the date (3/14). This number, known since antiquity and studied notably by the Greek mathematician Archimedes, remains today at the heart of many scientific calculations and technological applications.
Beyond the symbols, this day aims to remind us that mathematics is omnipresent in daily life. For example, in biology, the curves used to track the growth of infants are based on precise mathematical models, such as logarithmic functions.

In nature, the organization of hexagonal cells built by bees also illustrates the efficiency of geometric principles to optimize space while using a minimum of material.
Mathematics also plays a central role in data management and analysis. Widely used digital tools like Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets allow for the application of concepts such as percentages, numerical sequences, or powers in order to organize information, manage budgets, or analyze results.
The African continent also has renowned researchers in this field. Scientists like Abdon Atangana and Gabriel Nguetseng have contributed to important advances in mathematical modeling, notably in the understanding of complex phenomena related to oil exploitation or pollution processes.
