Cameroon–Canada Cooperation: 12 Cameroonian sailors in training to strengthen maritime autonomy

Cameroon takes a new step towards the empowerment of its maritime sector. Twelve Cameroonian executives have been selected to undergo a train-the-trainer program in Canada, as part of the strengthening of national capacities in accordance with international standards.

A ceremony marking the departure for training of twelve Cameroonian executives from the maritime sector was held on Thursday, March 5, 2026, in the conference room of the Ministry of Transport in Yaoundé. The meeting was chaired by MVEIMANI SOMBO AMBA, Secretary General of the Ministry of Transport, representing the Minister of Transport, Jean Ernest Masséna Ngallè Bibéhè. This initiative is part of the government strategy aimed at strengthening the capacities of the maritime and port sub-sector and providing Cameroon with autonomy in the training and certification of seafarers, in accordance with the requirements of the International STCW Convention on standards of training, certification, and watchkeeping.
In this context, twelve Cameroonian professionals have been selected to participate in a train-the-trainer program at the Emergency Trades Training Center of the Maritime Institute of Quebec, in Canada, from March 17 to April 17, 2026. At the end of this training, their mission will be to transmit the acquired skills to professionals in the sector in Cameroon, in a logic of knowledge transfer and multiplication.
In his speech, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Transport hailed a major initiative for the national strategy for the development of the maritime sector. He recalled that maritime safety and security are essential factors for the development of international trade and for the credibility of the Cameroonian flag.
For his part, the representative of the High Commissioner of Canada to Cameroon welcomed the choice of Canada for this high-level training, reaffirming his country’s availability to support Cameroon in strengthening human capacities in strategic sectors.
According to sector officials, this program constitutes a decisive step towards Cameroon’s empowerment in the training of its maritime professionals and the establishment of a national system compliant with international standards.
