Anicet Ekane’s son, Dr. Muna Ekane, speaks out amid the growing controversy over whether opposition parties and political actors will participate in his father’s funeral.

As the family prepares to transfer Anicet Ekane’s body from the morgue to the grave, political actors and parties are divided. Some, accusing the regime of influencing the funeral arrangements, decide to boycott. Others, finding no valid reason for a boycott, instead call for mobilization to pay a final tribute to the opposition figure who died under unclear circumstances. Faced with this division fueling the controversy, Muna Ekane breaks his silence and tries to bring the focus back. “You don’t settle political scores over the coffin of a hero,” he says.

For him, it is not the time to say who is an opponent and who is an ally of the regime. The moment is not for excluding a political party or actor, especially one belonging to the Union for Change. Because, “Anicet Ekane carried a cause bigger than a party. His political family has always gone beyond the sole framework of Manidem. It extends to the Union for Change and far beyond. No statement will close this circle,” denounces Anicet Ekane’s son.

His statement follows the publication by Manidem of a declaration in which the political bureau reiterates its position to boycott the funeral. It also considers the mobilization call launched by Issa Tchiroma Bakary as a breach of the agreement that binds them within the framework of UPC 2025. As well as confirmation that he supports the RDPC, the ruling party that contributes to destroying Manidem.

While the party asks change supporters to boycott the funeral, Muna Ekane announces that “all the people of change are expected” at the funeral. The man entrusted by the justice system with organizing the funeral insists that he is not the center of attention, but rather his late father who deserves to be buried with dignity. “Hate Muna if you want. But come. Come bow before Anicet… He belongs to the Cameroonian people,” he says. According to the funeral program, Anicet Ekane will be buried on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at Bomono Gare.
