With more than 50,000 tons in 2025, transit traffic to Niger via the port of Douala reaches an unprecedented level. A still modest signal compared to the total 1,967,214 tons, but strategic in the battle of the Sahel corridors.

The port of Douala is advancing its pawns on the Sahel axis. In 2025, transit traffic destined for Niger exceeded the 50,000-ton mark for the first time, according to Jean Daniel Tientcheu, head of billing control and marketing. An unprecedented threshold that reflects a clear ambition: to capture an increasing share of flows destined for landlocked countries.
At the port level, the performance remains relative. The total volume of transit peaks at 1,967,214 tons over the same period, still relegating the Niger corridor to a secondary rank. But the momentum is underway. In a competitive environment marked by the offensive of the ports of the Gulf of Guinea, every additional ton counts.
The challenge goes beyond immediate volumes. It is about consolidating a logistical position in contested Sahel markets, where costs, delays, and corridor reliability make the difference. By crossing this symbolic threshold, Douala sends a message: that of a hub determined to have more weight in sub-regional exchanges.
