
The famous writer received her insignia on February 02, 2026, in Yaoundé during a ceremony presided over by the French Ambassador to Cameroon, Sylvain Riquier.
The French Republic honors the Cameroonian writer Djaïli Amadou Amal, winner of the 2020 Goncourt Prize for High School Students with her novel *Les Impatientes*. On February 02, the head of the diplomatic mission of the French Republic to Cameroon presented her with the insignia corresponding to the rank of Knight of the Legion of Honor. A distinction awarded to her by French President Emmanuel Macron, who signed a decree on July 16, 2025, highlighting the “incredible richness” of her work.

The French Ambassador to Cameroon, Sylvain Requier, presided over the insignia presentation ceremony on Monday evening in Yaoundé. At the end of the ceremony, the embassy acknowledged that the writer is deeply involved in society and puts into words “to bear witness, to denounce, to raise awareness, to combine tradition and human dignity.” Given the importance and depth of her work, “we did not only want to show our gratitude, but to support a cause and make such a resonant voice a symbol for today and tomorrow,” the embassy wrote.
These remarks follow the decree of July 16, 2025. In this text, the French president recognized the writer’s unwavering commitment to defending and promoting women’s rights, both in her writings and through her associative work.

Upon receiving the insignia, Djaili Amadou Amal, UN Women Ambassador, expressed her gratitude to the French Republic for “this prestigious distinction.”
